The microfinance sector in Haiti has only existed in its current form since the late 1990s, when microfinance began to be viewed from a commercial perspective.
The Haitian private sector is relatively small and fragmented. Although no formal overarching strategy for private sector development exists, the Government of Haiti has put in place several measures to promote this sector.
Water and sanitation is a chronically under-funded in Haiti. The situation was exacerbated by the hurricanes of 2008, which led to severe losses of investments, in particular in Gonaives.
